À Poêle is a 55-seat neighbourhood bistro on the ground floor of Hing On Mansion in Taikoo Shing, a few minutes from Tai Koo MTR and opposite One Island East. Rattan chairs, marble tables and tall French doors give it the feel of a Paris café, and it stays open all day.
The menu sticks to bistro standards done properly. Begin with French onion soup under melted Gruyère, escargots or beef tartare, then go for steak frites with black pepper sauce, duck confit with mashed potato, steamed mussels in white wine or beef cheek bourguignon. Seafood towers with oysters and king prawns suit a group, and profiteroles or crème brûlée close things out.
Office workers come for the rotating weekday set lunch, and the two-course set dinner at HK$298 is fair value for the area. Weekends bring brunch for families, and a daily happy hour suits after-work drinks. Book online or call; catering and takeaway are also offered.
