Philippe has been serving French food on Soi Sukhumvit 39 since 1997, which makes it one of the longest-running French restaurants in the city. The dining room is traditional, with dark wood panelling, classic furniture and white tablecloths, and chef-owner Philippe Peretti still runs the kitchen.
The cooking sticks to the classics. Burgundy snails in garlic butter are the starter people come back for, and the chocolate soufflé is the dessert to save room for. The weekly set menu changes regularly; a recent one offered eggplant gratin or lentil soup with Morteau sausage, then roasted duck breast with apple and honey, mackerel in white wine cream or a grilled steak with fries, followed by apple tart or French cheese.
The set lunch at 950 baht plus tax is good value for a business lunch, and the dinner set costs 1,300 baht plus tax. It also suits older couples and anyone who prefers a quiet, formal room to a noisy wine bar. Book through the website or by phone, and note that it is closed on Mondays. Maison Philippe, the group's all-day café and deli, is further down the same soi.
