Lulu Bistrot sits on busy Jalan Batu Bolong but feels like a proper neighbourhood bistro once inside, with a dim, buzzy dining room, an outdoor terrace and a six-seat chef's counter facing the kitchen. The idea is French bistro cooking filtered through Indonesian memories, using local and seasonal produce.
Start with onde-onde croquettes with aioli and jamón, Sakoshi Bay oysters, chicken liver pâté with tamarind or a roasted scallop on a Lyonnaise dumpling with asam laksa nantua. Mains include onion tarte tatin, roast chicken with parsley sauce and a créole risotto with grilled octopus and nduja butter. From the wood-fired grill come wagyu bavette steak frites with sauce poivre, entrecôte café de Paris and a bone-in côte de boeuf. Finish with crème caramel or profiteroles.
Good for dates and groups alike, with sharing banquets for four or more. The chef's counter runs a four-course tasting menu nightly with wine or cocktail pairings. Happy hour runs from 5pm to 7pm. Its sister restaurant, Bartolo, is in Uluwatu.
